Sitting Down with Owner Drew Ryan
by Kaleem Clarkson
1. Can you give us a little history of your background and something people should know about yourself?
I was an art major at Bethany College and worked various sales jobs in Maine, New Hampshire, New York City and Tampa, FL for the first eight years after graduating. I got sick of that and moved to LA to take screen writing classes in 2005.
2. How did MoBoogie get started and why?
I was living in LA and was not very into that scene, but I wanted to do something with film and music. I sat down and wrote a business plan and got some seed money to buy a camera and hired a lawyer to get my LLC and to Trade Mark MoBoogie. After I struggled to get bands to talk to me in LA, I decided that Colorado had a great music scene, great location and great skiing. So myself and my one employee packed up my little 97’ mazda and headed to Denver. Denver has been great! We get a lot of National touring bands to come over to our loft to jam and chat about life. We also shoot live shows as well.
3. What is your biggest achievement or major accomplishment since the organization was founded?
We are a young company so I would have to say that our greatest achievement was winning the DaVinci Institute Colorado Inventor Showcase Software Product of the Year. The judges picked us for our vision and it was a big honor since the judges were Business men, investors and venture capitalists.
4. What were your biggest obstacles in obtaining to your goals?
Money!! I just wish I had the deep pockets to do what I really want to do. However with the launch of new site, I do feel that will change because I will be able to add more value to the company that will make us a lot more attractive in the face of investors, sponsors and advertisers.
5. What CDs have you’re purchased recently or downloaded?
Last week I bought Pepper’s new album. Pink Crustaceans and Good Vibrations. We needed it for our webisodes that we did on them. So check it out in the video section.
6. What community issue or social cause is most important to you personally?
Children.
I have volunteered for Big Brothers when I was in College, I also volunteered for the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee, Fl. I worked in the soup kitchen and for the after school program where we taught kids to speak better English, reading and math skills. I also took pictures for the website. Immokalee is in the middle of the Everglades and is has a huge migrant worker population with families from Mexico to Haiti. More than 50% of the families in Immokalee live below the poverty level so it felt great to do whatever I could.
7. What has MoBoogie done to give back to the community?
We feature charities on the website in our Charity Spotlight section, as well as donated T-shirts and hats to causes.
8. What do you think of Concepts4Charity and our mission of engaging youth in philanthropy through sports and the arts?
I think it’s great!! It’s very important for the youth to be involved in some way.
9. Where do you see MoBoogie.net in Ten Years?
I see MoBoogie being a name and a brand that everyone will recognize. The sky’s the limit. I see a MoBoogie TV on cable or satellite some day, maybe a magazine and a clothing line for Rock Stars and fans. Plus we will always be a website. We have great content and a killer name! It’s just fun to say MoBoogie and fans and bands dig what we do.
10. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you very much, I love what you guys do!
