moreQ & A with Musical Charis
We started the Musical Charis project last year in Sacramento. We started out just wanting to keep an open format, and not wanting to abide by the 4 “member” “band” mentality. We try to collaborate as much as possible. Our motivation behind our band is to spread the free gift of music around the world and just go along for the ride wherever it takes us. Charis means “gift” in Greek. Most people don’t know that Musical Charis includes 40+ musicians.
What is your biggest achievement or major accomplishment since you have been performing?
Opening a music school in Oak Park was a blessing we never expected…..we drove by the building, called the number, and moved in the next week…..after that, it’s been hard work, but wonderful at the same time.
What were your biggest obstacles in obtaining to your goals?
Unfortunately, the paper that everyone bows to….it’s really hard to work full time to support ourselves and keep the school open and try to record and play shows and eat…and you know…..bills.
Besides your own stuff, what music are you currently listening to?
Live music……mostly at Beatnik Studios, there is always good music there…..and of course Owl Train.
What community issue or social cause is most important to yourself or the group?
Just trying to keep it clean Baby
What have you or your group recently done to give back to the community?
During our preparations for the music school, we were able to meet with Mayor Kevin Johnson who referred us to Sylvia Fort who is the head of the Oak Park Community centers through Parks and Recreation. We ended up getting involved with the Kreative Kids Program teaching music classes Monday through Friday to kids age 7 to 12 at the Oak Park Community Center. On top of that, we have continued to work with new students giving private lessons at the school, and loving every minute of it. It’s a great way for us to give back to the community, sharing our gifts, as well as growing together as a group.
What do you think of Concepts4Charity and our mission of engaging youth in philanthropy through sports and the arts?

In the 2019 Version of Wizard of Oz.
